Alessandro Crippa – “Deck Ov Doom” Fanzine

Partito come un progetto personale sviluppato durante l’ultimo anno di studi “Deck Ov Doom” di Alessandro Crippa ha preso vita passando prima attraverso un installazione ed ora anche su supporto cartaceo.

Sviluppata e stampata con l’aiuto degli amici di BOLO, la zine nasce dall’idea di produrre una moderna e personale reinterpretazione delle Maior Arcana ispirandosi al mazzo Marsigliese, uno dei più antichi e tradizionali.

Il particolare stile illustrativo si sposa alla perfezione con le tematiche proposte, Alessandro Crippa si affida ai simboli per facilitare l’interpretazione di ogni singola carta che viene accompagnata da una splendida illustrazione che ne raffigura la tematica stessa attraverso metafore ed allegorie circa il suo significato più profondo o sulla personalità stessa della figura disegnata.

Un lavoro criptico, certosino per intensità, ricerca e soprattutto stile, che ci ha seriamente colpito ed affascinato, la fanzine esce ad un prezzo abbordabilissimo di 7 euro, edizione limitatissima di 50 copie firmate e numerate, se siete interessati a comprare una copia non vi resta che andare qui e contattare direttamente l’autore, a nostro avviso l’acquisto è d’obbligo ed abbiamo provveduto a prendere già la nostra.

This is a personal project I developed during my last year of uni, along with my dissertation.
It is a projectual exploration in the vaste dominion of tarots. In particular I focused my attention on the characters depicted in the 22 Maior Arcana. I chose the Marseille deck as starting point, as it is one of the oldest decks from which the tradition takes its steps.
I took inspiration from different famous decks like Ailester Crowley’s, Dave Mckean’s and Sergio Toppi’s one.

I decided to focus on a main element for each Maior Arcana and to draw it in a metaphorical way. Symbols are protagounists in this deck, as a matter of fact in every card there are two small symbols referred to the character. Their purpose is to make the card more easy to be recognized, even if I wanted the deck to be as cryptic as possible. These cards are allegories or metaphores of the real Arcana, they represent a characteristic or a meaning of the original one in an unusual way.

I want to thank my Illustration teacher Alberto Bettinetti, for the supervision and the help during the realization of the project, which consists of three steps: the realization of a full Maior Arcana deck, an installation made with the original drawings, and a poster realized in a more traditional style depicting all the maior arcana characters together.
